Synopsis
Justin and Mike are inseparable best friends. As a Christian, Justin, on occasion, attempts to witness to Mike. Coming from a broken home and very angry at life, Mike will have nothing to do with anything remotely religious. The one activity the two friends do share is their love of adventure and exploration. One evening, Justin and Mike head out in search of adventure as they explore an abandoned building. The guys quickly find themselves running from an unknown person who Mike inadvertently struck after throwing and object into the darkness of the building. The pursuit turns from a foot chase to a car chase before they know it. As Mike attempts to get away from their pursuer, the other car rams them sending them out of control into a water-filled ditch, leaving Justin pinned under water and ultimately losing his life. Justin’s father, Rex, chooses solitude to deal with loss rather than the support of his wife, Sheryl, and daughter, Sarah. Rex places partial blame on Mike when he discovers he was driving his son’s car at the time of the tragic accident. Mike chooses to blame God for the tragic loss of his best friend. He decides to “walk a mile” in Justin’s shoes, and, after borrowing a pair of his friend’s shoes from Sheryl, finds himself unloading all his years of built-up anger and hurt in prayer/yelling sessions at God while walking alone. Despite their own pain, Sheryl and Sarah reach out to Rex and Mike to help. They reveal to Rex just how far he has lost his way. Rex realizes he has not only neglected his family, but his relationship with God and determines to rededicate his life to Christ. Mike eventually decides to try exploring buildings alone to try to connect with Justin in some way. He quickly discovers all the prep work Justin had done prior to exploring and finds himself grossly under prepared. He reaches out to Sarah in the middle of the night, in a panic after falling and getting stuck in the dark. Rex comes to the rescue. After the rescue, Rex and Mike have their first heart-felt talk about their personal pain and hurt. Rex easily moves into a fatherly role of the fatherless young man. The two decide to take on the project of working an old broken down 68’ Chevy Camaro that was left by Mike’s father when he abandoned Mike and his mother. As the condition of the car improves, Mike’s feelings toward the Bible and Jesus softens. As new life is brought back to the car, Mike opens himself to new life in Christ. During this time, Rex also reaches out to the young man, Shawn, who caused the accident that took the life of his son. Mike soon learns a tough lesson of forgiveness as Rex introduces him to the young man in prison. Relationships are mended, new relationships are formed, and unlikely relationships are created.
